These four guards of the stoppers were the descendents of the Egyptian god Horus; In ancient Egypt, vital organs of mummies were preserved in four specific canopic jars. Each had a unique stopper, which were adorned with different heads; The human head was Imsety who preserved the liver. The baboon head was Hapi who protected the lungs. The jackal head was Duamutef who watched over the stomach. Finally, the falcon head was Qebehsenuef, who guarded over the intestines.
