Fun Information: Bartholomew Roberts, better known as Black Bart, was the most successful pirate during the Golden Age of Piracy. A third mate on a slave trade ship, his life took a drastic turn when the ship was captured by pirates. The crew members of the ship were forced to become pirates. Roberts was reluctant at first, but then he saw the advantages of being a pirate; He continued to live the rest of his life as a pirate. Just six weeks after being captured, the pirate captain was ambushed and killed, and Roberts became the new captain. From July 1719 to his death in February 1722, Black Bart became the most successful of his time, capturing more than 470 vessels; Black Bart’s boldness and ruthlessness gave him a fearsome reputation. He attacked any ship in sight, big or small, and never cowered during battle. A living legend in the seas, the mere sight of his ship was enough to have merchants surrender their ships. On one count, to display his ruthlessness, he captured 5 slave ships and held them for ransom. Four of the five captains obliged to his ransom, but one captain refused to give in. Roberts calmly set fire to the ship along with 80 slaves, killing everybody.
